Sour Cream Chocolate Cake

Our family loves chocolate cake.  Agreeing with Mr. Biddle, Disney’s “Happiest Millionaire”, “Chocolate cake is the perfect food”. This Sour Cream Chocolate Cake truly is a family favorite. There is never very much left after a family party.  In fact, the kids will often come back for a second or third piece and the pan is empty.  Another great thing about this cake is you just stir it together in a sauce pan.

  Sour Cream Chocolate Cake

1 cup butter
1/2 cup cocoa powder
3/4 cup water
2 cups sugar
1 cup sour cream
1 tbsp vanilla
2 eggs
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt

Grease and flour a 9″ X 13″ cake pan. In a large sauce pan over medium heat melt butter, add cocoa.

Whisk in water and remove from heat. To the warm cocoa mixture add the sugar, sour cream, eggs, and vanilla.  Whisk until smooth.  Sift the dry ingredients together and add all at once into chocolate mixture whisking until smooth.

Pour into prepared pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool on rack and frost with chocolate butter cream frosting.

Just a note, this was revised from a bundt cake recipe so it has a tendency to fall just a little bit. Make sure the toothpick comes out clean or it will fall even more.

Chocolate Butter Cream Frosting

1/3  cup butter
1/3 cup cocoa powder
3 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk (approximately)
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
pinch of salt

Cream butter, salt and on cup powdered sugar mixed with cocoa until fluffy.  Add remaining powdered  sugar and milk alternately until spreading consistency.  Stir in vanilla. Spread over cooled cake.

Enjoy!

  1. This is the first time I’ve EVER posted a comment but this recipe deserved a reply… YUM!! What a delicious moist chocolaty cake! I modified this recipe slightly because of ingredients I had on hand and to make a little healthier. I used a half cup butter and a half cup coconut oil and reduced the sugar to 1 1/2 cups. I baked in a 9 x 9″ pan for 40 min. Turned out great! I’m writing this recipe down as there are a gazillion chocolate cake recipes out there! This one I don’t want to lose and am certain will make again and again! Thank you for sharing this!! 🙂
