Show and Tell Saturday #4

February 22, 2014 by Margaret Leave a Comment

For years I watched my mother make things to give as gifts for Christmas, Birthdays, Mother’s Day, and any other holiday you give gifts.  It is no surprise I like to do the same thing.  After my nephew was born I decided that my mom needed a decoration about grandkids.  It was her first grandchild and I knew he was going to be spoiled, as I knew all grandchildren would be at Grandma and Grandpa’s house.  I set off to find the perfect gift.  I knew I wanted it to say, “Grandkids Spoiled Here” but beyond that I really was not sure.  I had just caught the sewing bug and was (1) too cheap to go buy a pattern (not that I could find one I liked) and (2) too picky about what I wanted that I decided to design my own project.

This was my first true attempt and making a pattern. I really had no idea what I was doing.  I knew enough to make sure that it would fit together properly, and I had a computer and printer to use to get shapes and letters.  I jumped right in and built what I could, then I found some great buttons to add to what I had created.

It was definitely not perfect, but I learned about the design process and well, my mom loved it!  That was enough for me.

Last Minute Gift in Minutes

February 13, 2014 by Margaret 3 Comments

I have an acquaintance whose wife just a had a baby girl after two boys.
He is so proud of her and shows new pictures every time I see him.
Out of the blue I decided that I wanted to make something for the baby.  I love to make gifts.  So I set out to see what was in my stash of fabric and so
forth that I could make a nice gift.

A number of years ago I purchased several very soft fleece receiving blankets at a yard sale that were brand new with blanket stitching around the outside edge. Great!  I had a white one.  It’s a girl I couldn’t use the blue or green that I had as well.  I have a book with several patterns that are perfect for babies.

I chose a Happy Sun to applique and started sorting through my flannel
scraps for soft colors that might work.

In about 90 minutes from start to finish I had this cute receiving blanket finished and I love it when I can use up my stash.  It makes room for more.

Just a note, soft fleece goes on sale often.  For a great price you can purchase a yard and blanket stitch the outside edge to have on hand for when you need a quick baby gift.

I am giving it to him tomorrow.
