The Best Garlic Bread

December 29, 2014 by Margaret 3 Comments

Garlic Bread is a super easy side dish!
Have you ever noticed that some meals just call for garlic bread?

Pizza

Spaghetti

Stew

Lasagna

Salad

Fettuccine Alfredo

Grilled Chicken

There are so many these are just a few of my favorites. And just like the number of meals garlic bread goes well with, there are that many ways to make it.  This is my favorite!
First you need some really good French Bread. When I have the time, I like to make it. Here is the link to our Easy French Bread. If you don’t have time or your not a baker…no problem… just visit your favorite bakery.

Now for The Best Garlic Bread!

Garlic Butter

1/2 cup Butter (room temperature)
1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1 teaspoon Parsley Flakes
Stir it all together.
Tip: Make sure your butter is really soft. It makes stir so much easier.
This is usually enough for one loaf of French Bread.
Now slice your garlic bread to the thickness you like. Mine is probably are 2/3″.
Butter one side of each slice.
You will need a piece of foil large enough to wrap the loaf in.
Push your loaf back together.
Wrap it up. Place in a 350 degree oven for 15-20 min. or until it is warm through.
Serve warm. Your Garlic Bread will be soft, melt in your mouth good.
Enjoy!

Easy French Bread

June 18, 2014 by Mary Ellen Stringham 9 Comments

We love French bread. You can do so many things with it, you can use it as
pizza crust, french toast,
toasted with PB & J, cheese sandwich or any sandwich for that matter, garlic bread, cheesy garlic toast and our favorite hot from the oven with butter.

This recipe is great to start before you begin preparing dinner and can serve it fresh
from the oven when dinner starts.

Ingredients

2 tbsp SAF yeast
2 1/2 cups hot water
3 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp salt
5 tbsp vegetable oil
6 cups flour
1 egg white
Sesame seeds (optional)

In mixer bowl, mix 4 cups flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Add hot water (I get it as hot as my tap will get) and oil.  Mix until smooth.  Scrape sides.  Stir in remaining flour and mix well.
Leave in mixing bowl, let rest 10 minutes. Turn mixer on to stir down dough, about 30 seconds.  Let rest again for 10 minutes, stir down,  repeat 3 more times. Turn dough out onto floured board.  Knead until lightly coated with flour.  Divide dough in half .  Flatten and  form each half into a  9″ X 13″ rectangle and roll tightly lengthwise , seal edges and place seam edge down on greased baking sheet.

Brush with beaten egg white and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Gash diagonally  3 times with sharp knife.
Cover and let raise until doubled, 20-30 minutes.
Bake at 400 degrees for 35 minutes

It is great made up as rolls too.

Make a couple of loaves for your next family dinner.

Easy French Rolls

May 7, 2014 by Mary Ellen Stringham 6 Comments

Our family likes to eat a great variety of foods. There is always something at the dinner table that one person might not like, but the one weakness we all have is bread. Hot rolls for dinner are the best.
Since variety is the spice of life, this is our spice for this week.

“EASY FRENCH ROLLS”

are made from a variation of this great old recipe of Winnifred Jardine,
a past Food Editor for the Deseret News.

I don’t really know if you can botch this recipe.

Ingredients

2 tbsp SAF yeast
2 1/2 cups hot water
3 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp salt
5 tbsp vegetable oil
6 cups flour
1 egg white

In mixer bowl, mix 4 cups flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Add hot water (I get it as hot as my tap will get) and oil.  Mix until smooth.  Scrape sides.  Stir in remaining flour and mix well.

Leave in mixing bowl, let rest 10 minutes. Turn mixer on to stir down dough, about 30 seconds.  Let rest again for 10 minutes, repeat 3 more times. Turn out dough onto floured board.  Knead once or twice until lightly coated with flour.  Divide dough in half and from each half, cut into 12 equal pieces.
Form each piece into a ball and place on grease baking sheet.  Let raise 30 minutes.

Brush with beaten egg white and gash across top with sharp knife.
It can also be formed into 2 loaves and cut 3 gashes diagonally.

Bake in 400 degree oven for 8-12 minutes or until golden brown.  Serve hot with butter and your favorite home made jam. Ours is raspberry.

This recipe can also be made even if you don’t have a mixer.  Just stir vigorously with a large
spoon leaving the spoon in the dough during rest and stir vigorously to stir down dough.

For fun variations after brushing with egg white sprinkle with sesame seeds or poppy seeds.

ENJOY!
