Orange Rolls

February 16, 2016 by Mary Ellen Stringham 2 Comments

Orange Rolls became a family dinner tradition more than 40 years ago.  My mother found them at a local bakery when I was growing up.  They were purchased only on special occasions and holidays.  When my husband and I moved our family away we were too far away to attend most of those family dinners.  A few years ago we took our family and Thanksgiving dinner to my mother’s house.  We purchased the orange rolls from the same bakery and somehow they were not as good.

Chocolate Madeleines

February 3, 2016 by Mary Ellen Stringham Leave a Comment

Many years ago my husband introduced us to these fun French shell shaped sponge cakes called “Madeleines”.  There are lots of recipes for different flavors but you just can’t go wrong with Chocolate Madeleines.

It always amazes me how as time passes and we try new recipes we have a tendency to forget some of our old favorite. I love making new things but when we made  Madeleines not long ago I remembered, as did my children, how much we love them.

Hello Dolly’s

January 21, 2016 by Mary Ellen Stringham 2 Comments

I’m not sure why the name “Hello Dolly’s” was given to these great old cookies, but I know that they are wonderful to eat.  This is the perfect recipe for those who love to eat chocolate, pecans and coconut and aren’t afraid of calories!  We love soft and/or chewy cookies and these fit the bill for both.  This recipe is fast, easy and doesn’t require much prep work.

Hot Milk Sponge Cake

January 30, 2015 by Mary Ellen Stringham 7 Comments

My husband loves cake. If it has fruit on it all the better. For years I would make angel food cake and serve it topped with berries and ice cream or whipped cream.  Then we found this great Hot Milk Sponge Cake recipe in a 1973 printing of Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book.  The cake had similar texture with a different flavor and gave us another option.

Everyone has a food that is hard to resist. Mine is cookies. It doesn’t really matter what kind I love them. The problem is that I can’t usually stop with just one, and this

“Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie”

recipe is no different. It has two of my favorite ingredients, CHOCOLATE and NUTS. Oh,ya!!

They have cake like softness with a little crispness around the bottom  edge and full of chocolaty goodness.
