4th of July Pipe Cleaner Crafts

June 21, 2013 by Margaret 2 Comments

I’ve been attempting to be creative with my kids again. They had such a good time with the Pipe Cleaner Bugs I thought we’d try pipe cleaners again. I found some great pipe cleaner tutorials for some 4th of July fun here, here, here, and here.

Our first creation was supposed to be a pipe cleaner leis, but we ran out of red pipe cleaner. When I connected it to see how big it was my little princess immediately exclaimed, ” a crown.” So our leis is a 4th of July Princess Crown. The tutorial can be found here on Nurturing the Tender Years.

Then we played with Sparklers and Puppets. I’m not sure who had more fun me or the kids. I fell in love with these puppets as soon as I saw them. In case you can’t tell they are Uncle Sam, an Eagle, and the Statue of Liberty. Tyler kept calling the eagle a bat. I guess I should remember that come Halloween. The tutorial is for finger puppets. We put ours on craft sticks so they would last 2 days rather than 1. I was barley able to take a picture before my kids hauled off with their new toys. Their favorite part of construction was the poofy balls (pom poms) Tyler took control of the big ones so naturally Emma had to have the little ones. My little helpers were…a…very helpful once they started eating their snack and left the poofy balls alone.

Next we moved on to decorations. Our fireworks are really easy. I got the idea from Better Homes and Gardens. We tried adding glitter but I think my glue was too old because it didn’t really work but we still managed to have fun fireworks.  Yes, we did most of this in one afternoon. They are all really easy and fun 4th of July crafts.

Bugs Needed a Home

June 6, 2013 by Margaret Leave a Comment

My kids love playing with their pipe cleaner bugs. They fly and crawl them all over the house, but the other day Tyler said, “Mom, they (the bugs) need a place to live.” I was stumped. What had I started? So again we went to the craft box. Which I might add is in desperate need of a trip to the craft store. I had to find something that would pass for a house for creepy, but cute bugs. I found my felt stash and and went to work.

So again I pulled out the glue gun and scissors. First I had to make a flannel board. All you need is  piece of cardboard, batting, and flannel .

Center the cardboard on the batting and start gluing. Make sure to pull the batting tight.

Then do the same with the flannel. Turn it over and you have a flannel board.

I asked my kids where, caterpillars, butterflies, and dragonflies live. This is what we came up with: apple tree, cloud, flowers, pond and lily pads.

Now the bugs have a place to live.

Happy crafting!

Pipe Cleaner Bugs

May 20, 2013 by Margaret Leave a Comment

My kids get tired of me sitting at the computer and sewing machine so we had a craft day. I bought a bag of pipe cleaners a few months ago for a project that never happened. The kids have been asking what they were for weeks so I decided it was time to introduce them to the fun of pipe cleaners. They really weren’t interested until I suggested we make bugs. They helped my gather supplies and this is what we came up with:

pipe cleaners
craft sticks
little pom poms
googly eyes
wire cutters (save your scissors)
glue gun and glue

For the caterpillars cut 1 pipe cleaner into 4 equal pieces. Wrap them around another pipe cleaner. Bend and twist until they look like legs.

Glue on pom poms, eyes and craft stick.

For the butterfly and dragonfly twist 2 pipe cleaners together, bend in half and keep twisting. Leave enough untwisted to make antennas.

Bend and twist pipe cleaners until you have wings. Glue pom pom for a head and glue on eyes.

To help them fly glue on a craft stick.

Happy Crafting!
